How To Make Fancy Dress Costumes

by Owen Jones

People all over the world like watching films and films often reflect local traditional stories and folklore. The fascination with ghosts, ghouls and witches is a global phenomenon, but there are more local ones too.

One of the most well-known in Europe is the so-called vampire, Vlad the Impaler, who really did exist but probably not in the form of the vampire that we all know of today from books and films.

Then there are the witches and warlocks who have been both respected and feared throughout history. Think of Merlin the Magician from the court of King Arthur and the witches of Salem in the United States, who were persecuted and murdered along with thousands of others in Europe at that same time.

There are also tree nymphs or dryads, believed in by the ancient druids and many peoples in other continents as well such as Asia and Africa. Fairies and goblins are or at least were widely feared all over the world and there were the little people in Ireland, the Leprechauns. However, these characters did not only live on land. The ancient Greeks believed in Poseidon the god of the sea and many sailors believed in mermaids.

Some would argue that angels, cherubim, seraphim and the like come into the same group. Some would even say that Satan and God do too. All of the above characters, with the possible exception of God, have been represented by human beings at parties that we call fancy dress parties many, many times.

Many movies have been made which include some of the above characters. The most famous of these in recent years being the Harry Potter series and the Lord of the Rings. Just imagine the work that must have gone into making the costumes for those films.

What if you could design your own costume on that level of excellence for your next fancy dress party? Well, the costume designers working on those pictures are professionals, of course, and they have big budgets and plenty of resources to work with. You will be much more limited, but you can still realize very good results.

The first thing to do is select the character that you want to dress up as. Let’s say a vampire. Then you ought to do a little investigation to find out what the character looked like. This is very easy on the Internet or you might have films and books on the topic. Then you make a list of the items you will need in order to dress yourself the same and maybe the make-up you will need too.

So, for a vampire, you will require long black trousers or a long black dress; a black jacket, shirt or blouse; black shoes and a black cape (or blanket). Some white make-up or talcum powder will give you a ghouls skin tone and some red or dark-red lipstick will emphasize your deathly pale facial appearance. A set of long white or yellowish fangs finishes the identity. Then all you require to do is practice a couple of hypnotic stares in the mirror and a couple of weird stares and you are ready.

If you find it difficult to get hold of any piece of the fancy dress, you could either rent a costume locally or purchase one from the Internet.

Using Temporary Tattoos To Accent Your Halloween Costume

by Christien Tinsley

The trick in your trick-or-treat is really all about the details. Constructing a great costume which will win you attention, if not awards, at a costume party or ball is achieved through careful planning and creative detail. While there are plenty of nice, ready-made costumes out there for those satisfied with average Halloween get-ups, for those who want to really make an impression, more planning is required.

It’s the little things that really bring a costume to life and round out your appearance. Taking on new persona means shedding your normal appearance and replacing it with a comprehensive, new guise. To create the best costume possible, you will need any or all of the following items:

- An outfit, including any clothing, shoes, or lack thereof required for creating your character

- A wig, temporary hair dye, hair extensions, or a skull cap, for those characters that are bald

- Wardrobe accessories, like belts, scarves, capes, suspenders, hats, glasses, colored contacts

- Jewelry and body art, including standard jewelry, fake piercings, temporary tattoos, face paint

If you’re the sort who really digs Halloween and revels in the opportunity to put on a new face for the occasion, you should consider using as many intricate details as possible in the creation of your costume. Topping off your outfit with accessories allows you to produce a uniquely impressive appearance and makes it virtually impossible to discern your true identity.

If you’re struggling to come up with a unique costume idea for this year’s Halloween bash or costume ball, consider some of the following options.

Traditional Characters with a Contemporary Bend

Modernizing a traditional character breathes new life into an old image. A metro-sexual Dracula, a younger and hipper Frankenstein, or a modern, sexy witch or sorceress will surely get people’s attention. Put on your creative thinking cap and ponder what Dracula, Morgan le Fay, or Frankenstein’s more modern appearance might entail.

Dracula was a lady’s man after all, and he would certainly be a hipster if he were around today, craving the blood of the young and trendy urban masses. Combine some of the character’s traditional costume appearance with modern clothing styles or designs. Take the traditional cape from the historic image and add some skinny legged black jeans, a couple of bat or dripping blood temporary tattoos, some white base makeup and a bit of eyeliner with some fake fangs and a good, dark wig, and you have a modern vamp.

A younger, hipper Frankenstein might look like a punk rock star, with black army boots, a barbed wire temporary tattoo, some black nail polish and some greenish base makeup for giving the monster an undead appearance. Don’t forget the bolts on your neck and a few of the traditional monster’s trademark details so people know who you are. Add some contemporary flare as well to establish a new and uniquely modern Frankenstein’s monster.

A modern witch or sorceress would definitely have tattoos and piercings. She’s given up the broom or spell-casting staff a long time ago and traded in her floppy hat and old, ragged robes for sleeker, more sexy clothing. A brilliant, long, red, burgundy or black wig, some great makeup, a fake nose stud, and some Celtic knot work, dragon, serpent or goddess temporary tattoos will round out the look.

The Celebrity Look-a-Like

If you’re considering spending Halloween dressed as your favorite musician or movie star, there are certainly details that will bring the character to life. Be sure to get the hair and trademark clothing styles just right. Add jewelry that the individual typically wears, and get a couple of strategically placed and clearly visible temporary tattoos that match as best as possible those adorning the person you’re portraying. Ensure you mimic the walk, voice and body language of the individual as well.

Topping Any Costume with Detail

No matter what monster, ghoul, goblin or beastie you intent to become for Halloween, there are definitely accessories that will help make your costume one-of-a-kind. The streets are filled with run-of-the-mill bad guys and evil doers on Halloween, and setting yourself apart from the crowd can be a challenge.

Make the task easier by paying close attention to the little things. Add accessories and small makeup details to your costume to get a unique look. A temporary tattoo or two that blend well with your character’s overall appearance will also help make your costume complete.

Belly Dancing Clothes – Be In Style In These Unique, Beautiful And Colorful Costumes

by Fred Gagnon

Belly dancing clothes are a fashionable way to celebrate Halloween. These outfits have unique, beautiful and colorful designs.

Belly dancing clothes or belly dancing costumes, as the name suggests, are garments worn by belly dancers. Belly dance is a type of dance in which every part of the body is involved, though the most featured body part is usually the belly and hips.

Belly dance originated from the Middle East. Thus, it is sometimes called Middle Eastern dance or Arabic dance. This traditional dance has evolved now, both in costume and dance style.

Since belly dance takes many different forms depending on country and region, there are also different types of belly dancing clothes. The most common belly dancing clothes is comprised of a fitted top or bra, a fitted hip belt, and a skirt or harem pants. Such belly dancing clothes is called “bedlah”, which is Arabic for suit.

The foundation of the belly dancing costumes is the bra and the belt. The fitted top or bra as well as the fitted hip belt are usually made with a fringe of beads or coins. These garments may also be richly decorated with sequins, braid and embroidery. The hip belt, which is a broad piece of fabric, may be a separate piece worn low on the hips or it can be sewn into a skirt.

There are many variations for harem pants. The classic harem pants are full and gathered at the ankle. Harem pants are sometimes worn together with a sheer skirt. Skirts used in belly dancing are usually made of multiple layers of one color sheer fabric chiffon.

The designs for belly dance costume are divided into several styles. Among these styles, the three most popular belly dancing clothes are Egyptian, Turkish and American styles.

Egyptian belly dancing clothes

Egyptian belly dancing clothes is comprised of a gown or skirt, a fringed bra, separate sleeves and veil. Often, a matching bra and belt set, that can be worn over a variety of different skirts, are used. Egyptian style may also include a long, figure-hugging lycra one-piece gown with strategically placed cut-outs filled in with sheer, flesh-colored fabric. A sheer body stocking may also be worn to cover the midsection.

Turkish belly dancing clothes

Turkish belly dancing clothes often contain three or four pieces that reflect the playful, flirty style of Turkish belly dance. This type of belly dancing clothes includes a bra and a two or three piece belt with a skirt and veil. The belt may or may not be attached to the skirt. Many of these Turkish belly dancing costumes have skirts designed to display both legs up to the hip, and plunging bras. Earlier Turkish belly dancing costumes were designed like it.

American belly dancing clothes

Clothes for American belly dancing often involve an accessorized top or bra (usually decorated with coins and metalwork), belt, harem pants or long skirt and an optional veil. It may also include a headband with fringe. Sheer harem pants or skirts are used rather than tight lycra.

There are other belly dancing clothes such as the Lebanese type, the oriental and tribal belly dance clothes.

Lebanese belly dancing clothes include sheer and skimpy skirt, bra and hip belt. A matching veil is also worn.

There is also the oriental belly dancing clothes design that contains several pieces. This includes a bra and one-piece belt, a skirt, which may or may not be attached to the belt, and a veil.

Another variety is the tribal belly dance clothes which include elaborate headdresses and turbans, tribal jewellery, and layered skirts. Also an essential part is the exotic make-up and face decoration.

Belly dancing clothes are meticulously crafted. These garments are designed to stand out.

Celebrate Halloween For A Month

by Coleen Smith

Some people think that Halloween is one day, October 31st. That’s just not true, because it’s not enough time! There are a lot of fun things to do in the weeks leading up to Halloween. It’s become a whole season, almost like the Christmas holiday season.

Unlike Christmas which is about faith, love and gifts, Halloween is about being scared and dressing up. Halloween is frivolous, crazy and wild, not warm and serious. At Halloween time you might do what you otherwise wouldn’t. Like dressing up in a costume and pretending to be someone you’re not.

Everyone knows that the costume is one of the very best things about Halloween. You can dress sexy, in a playful way that you never would any other time of year. Or you can try on the persona of someone real or imaginary that you admire. Then there’s always the comedic route. Creativity is the key to a great costume, regardless of the look you’re going for.

Being frightened is, of course, a great way to get into the spirit of All Hallows Eve. Read a good book about werewolves, vampires or a serial murderer. Forget that some things are impossible and let yourself get into the spirit of things. There are tons of good scary books for all ages. There are childrens books about friendly monsters, like child vampires and witches who get into mischief. There are volumes of scary stories to be read at night by older kids. Even adults can find a good book that will keep them awake at night if that’s what they want.

How about watching a scary movie with the lights turned low? There are so many classics to choose from, and they’re all out on DVD. You can get a psychological thriller or a bloody horror flick or somewhere in between. Get a bowl of popcorn and a few friends and make an evening of it. Or stay up late at night when you’re all alone in the house and watch the scariest movie you can think of. October is a popular time of year for new horror movies to be released. A movie theater, with its darkened interior, high volume and surround sound, is a great place to watch a frightening flick. And there’s an added benefit in the fact that you don’t know what’s going to happen.

Of course, you could go the festive route and throw a Halloween party. Parties can be tailored to any age group, or to all ages. Peruse the local Party City for ideas for decorations, games, food and more.

Haunted houses have grown wildly in popularity in recent years. You can be scared out of your wits by ghouls and ghosts in elaborate attractions with many scary scenes. Some are private residences decked out for Halloween night, while others are professional operations staged by special effects designers and actors. Many theme parks transform themselves into fright fests with mazes and actors that will chase you!

All of this October frivolity will, of course, culminate in trick or treating on the 31st. Children in costumes get candy at each house when they go door to door crying “Trick or Treat!” Parents and older kids can escort the younger kids around the neighborhood. Of course they should put on their best Halloween costumes too. And, lastly, to make it all work, someone needs to stay home and hand out the goodies.

As you can clearly see, all of this can’t be accomplished in just one night. You need weeks, if not the whole month of October, to prepare and celebrate the spookiest holiday of the year.

A Short History Of The Mascot

by Adriana Noton

Mascots are typically known as a good luck charm or a symbol that represents a team, an individual or an organization. Mascot originates from the French translation of charm. Charms such as the ones used can be seen worldwide.

Originally, the charm aspect of the mascot was what defined it. The soldiers in World War I carried mascots, such as buttons, figures, coins and other objects that they believed would keep them safe or give them better luck in combat. Some say that the mascots of early man can be seen in cave drawings of humans donning animal heads or other garb that would depict an animal that was being hunted at the time.

The mascot evolved over time from charms that were to bring good luck to the animals and other representatives used by schools and universities that we see today. This practice started in the 1800s and were usually live animals. The cost of keeping up with live animals became too much and the costumes started showing up.

Drink manufacturers and breakfast cereals began to also use mascots to help them sell their products. Marketing companies would seek to draw in customers and consumers of any age. Events that are important to local communities are targeted by companies that want to get attention. They use energetic costumed people to bring crowds to their events. People who take on the artists role, generally men, need to be highly entertaining and willing to do what it takes to get a rise from the audience.

They are often required to learn and perform certain dances that crowds are used to seeing at games. These artists do not want to let the fans down. Their specific purpose is to bring entertainment and life to the people in the stands. They also bring another source of income for teams, schools and universities in the form of merchandising. Games and local retail stores are the best places to make money off of the products representing the team. Stuffed animals, keychains, hats and t-shirts among other products are often offered featuring the mascot of local and nationwide teams and schools.

These entertainers hold power over crowds of all ages. They can repel or attract attention. Any good team wants to make sure they have an entertainer that can draw the crowd in and get them to cheer for them. Teams often have interchangeable mascots and nicknames but the two do not have to be related, such as the Cleveland Browns who use four different breeds of dogs to represent their team, namely TD, Chomps, Trapper and CD.

Some of the most famous custom mascots of all time are Tony the Tiger, the Kool-aid Man and the Dig em frog. These are all examples of representatives that help to sell products. There are many cartoons and commercials based on these mascots that people can remember going back to the beginning of television.

Some famous sports team mascots are the Arizona cardinal, Rowdy of the Dallas Cowboys and Sir Purr for the Carolina Panthers. These excited, energetic people dressed in hot, stuffy mascot costumes get the crowds going at every game, cheering for their team and interacting with the fans.

One of the main protagonist and antagonist in Star Wars is Anakin Skywalker, who was a Jedi and became the Dark Lord of the Sith. The first Star Wars movie was released in 1977. It became a worldwide pop culture phenomenon so that two sequels followed, which were released at three-year intervals.

There is a wide variety of Star Wars costumes for everybody, from infant to toddler to children to adult. Anakin Skywalker is a very popular Star Wars character, who led both the light and the dark side of the Force. He was one of the main protagonists in the prequel films of Star Wars who became the chief antagonist, Darth Vader, in the original Star Wars trilogy.

Anakin Skywalker was a slave who lived with his mother on the planet called Tatoonie. Shmi, his mother, said that Anakin had no father, implying miraculous birth. Anakin learned valuable mechanical and technical skills. With these skills, he was able to create his own protocol droid, C-3PO, out of spare parts. He also had the ability to “see things before they happen”.

Anakin also became very skillful at pod racing. He was the only human who was skilled at such sport. And because of his extremely fast movements, he won his freedom in a pod race. This, however, caused him to part with his mother.

Later in his life, Anakin met Qui-Gon Jinn, a skilled Jedi master. Because of Anakin’s abilities, Qui-Gon Jinn was convinced that Anakin is the one who will bring balance to the Force as foretold by a Jedi prophecy. So, the Jedi master brought Anakin to the Jedi Council. But the council was hesitant to train the boy as a Jedi due to his young age and possible clouded future.

The Council reconsidered their decision when Anakin helped defeat the Trade Federation by destroying their command ship. The Council allowed Obi-Wan Kenobi to train young Anakin as a Jedi. Anakin and Obi-Wan were later assigned to protect Padme Amidala from assassination attempts.

Anakin traveled with Padme Amidala, the Senator of Naboo. The two of them fell in love but they had to keep their relationship secret as it is forbidden. During that time, he also endured the violent death of his mother. He carried with him a great sense of loss in addition to great anger and became Darth Vader, The Lord of the Sith.

Anakin Skywalker costumes basically consist of a tunic, brown shirt, pants, boot tops and belt. It may also include a hooded Jedi robe. These are available in different sizes from children to adult.

To add a genuine final touch to your Anakin Skywalker costume, wear the Jedi braid. The Jedi braid is a small blonde braid attached to a clip.

Anakin lost his biological hand in the battle with evil Darth Tyranus so he replaced it with a mechanical hand. He wore gauntlet to cover the mechanical hand. So, for your accessory, you can wear gloves or gauntlet. This will complete your Anakin Skywalker costume.

Anakin had a lightsaber that Luke, his son, inherited as a Jedi. You can finish off your Anakin Skywalker costume properly with this accessory. There are battery operated lightsabers that don’t only light up but also extends to over 3 feet in length.

Costumes For Couples

by Michael Williamson

The increase in demand for adult Halloween costumes over recent years has been amazing. It seems like every single year that more and more men and women are getting involved with the trend for putting on a costume at Halloween – particularly the adults.

It used to just be a thing for the kids. Dressing all of them up for the night was a wonderful exercise for the entire household and I reckon that some of that excitement has worn off on the “grown-ups”.

The thing is that where a child’s costume could usually be just a little bit homemade, we grownups are constantly searching for something that is going to make us get noticed, even if only just a bit. This is made twice as complicated if there are two of you going to the same celebration and because of this you are seeking for adult couple Halloween costumes instead of just single outfits.

The excellent news is the fact that the Halloween costume marketplace is developing all the time and so you will discover lots of new Halloween costumes coming out, a lot of of which might make suitable Halloween costumes for couples.

As we get closer to Halloween this year there are several directions you can go in if you would like to buy Halloween costumes for couples. It is advisable to work out if you want to buy or hire your outfits in the first place and then just what type of Halloween costume you are both going to wear. Will it be movie centered, or will you branch out and try for much more unique Halloween costumes that maybe nobody else will be wearing?

If you get these ideas straight in your thoughts, you’ll be much better set to decide on particular outfits when you get to them.
